Server Metrics Monitored

For most server monitoring, we monitor a standard set of metrics which include CPU utilization, memory, disk/storage utilization and bandwidth. We can also monitor applications running on those servers along with any custom metrics you may be interested in having monitored.

Server Monitoring Methodology

iGLASS uses a combination of standard protocols such as ICMP Ping and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) for monitoring servers. For monitoring Windows Servers we also often employ Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). WMI monitoring allows us to poll for much more detailed information but does require some additional set up on each Windows Server to be monitored.

Web Server Monitoring

Web servers present some unique challenges simply because they are customer-facing and often critical to your business. As a result, it is often not enough to simply know a web server is up and running, but rather imperative to know it is working.

For monitoring web servers, iGLASS uses both the standard metrics and methods mentioned above, but also web-specific polls to verify the proper functioning of those web servers. Examples include HTTP checks, polling the availability of specific web pages and return codes, and synthetic transactions. For more information about our monitoring of websites, please see our Website Monitoring page.

SNMP traps and syslog are fully supported

iGLASS also fully supports processing of SNMP traps and syslog generated by monitored servers. For Windows Event Monitoring we can recommend several free utilities to convert Windows Events to syslog to further extend this functionality to Windows.

Our flexible, rules-based processing engine allows us to specify the severity of events at the moment they're received, and generate emails, pages or phone calls to your staff from our 7x24 NOC. Rules may even be time-based or count-based, so we'll only alert, for example, when X number of events or reported in Y number of minutes. The best part is that, as a managed service, the iGLASS NOC staff maintains these often complex rules so you don't have to!
